The net melon is characterized by a skin criss-crossed by intertwined lines in relief, and by an intense yellow-orange flesh which is particularly perfumed and tasty. The melon contains small flat seeds. It is a Summer fruit and particularly sweet. The high water content makes it very thirst quenching, indeed, in addition to being consumed at various times of the day as a fruit, rich in taste but poor in calories, it is often used as a light starter. It originates from the Caucasus, and is normally cultivated in countries with a temperate climate; Italy, together with Spain and France, is one of the main European countries producing this sought after fruit. Indeed, the melon needs a warm temperate climate and land exposed to the sun. Oranfrizer melons only come from dedicated Sicilian production areas, in particular the Southern coastal strip (Agrigento and surrounds), the Western extremity (Trapani and surrounds) and a number of areas of the Plains of Catania.
