The prickly pear, or Barbary fig, is a spontaneous crop of the Mediterranean shrub land in Sicily. Here, it has found favourable climatic conditions to establish itself and develop.
Given its capacity to adapt in the presence of lack of water, this is a plant of enormous potential for agriculture and provision of foods for the more arid countries.
The yellow variety is the most widespread, while the white and red ones are a minority crop.
The prickly pear is a fruit with an oval or elongated berry (normally 100 % 200 gr), and are made up of a thick bodied skin (30%-40% of the total weight of the fruit) which surrounds a succulent flesh (60%-70% of the total weight of the fruit) containing numerous seeds.
